ASD Prevention/Building Resilience

As a parent, you want the best for your child.  That means protecting them from any and all forms of illnesses, diseases, or mental health concerns.  For many parents, Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) are at the very top of that list.

There is a lot of concern and speculation about what causes ASD.  The truth is that there is no known cause of ASD.  However it is likely that both genetic and environmental factors play a role (MFMER, 2019).  For some children, a genetic disorder or gene mutation can be identified as a contributing factor to their ASD diagnosis.  Researchers are still studying the relation between genetics and ASD.  They are also still exploring the link between ASD and environmental factors such as infections, medications, and pollution.

The bottom line?  Since ASD cannot be attributed to one specific cause, prevention is difficult.  However Early Identification of the signs and symptoms of ASD can give your child their best chance at a successful future.  Learn more about the signs and symptoms of ASD by clicking here.

While ASD cannot be prevented, there is much that can be done to encourage independence and resiliency in children who are diagnosed with ASD.  Check out the links below for more information on strategies commonly used to build resilience in children with ASD.

Visual Supports are an important tool in helping children who are nonverbal communicate without a translator.
Social recreational programs are a great way for children with ASD to practice social skills and make friends.
